About ISU Police

The Field Services function of Iowa State University Police is responsible for providing a variety of protective and security services designed for the preservation of life and personal safety of the university customer and the protection of personal and university property. Field Services strives to prevent crime by community-oriented policing and visible patrol methods.

Field Services is comprised of a captain, three patrol lieutenants, three patrol sergeants, and several patrol officers for each shift. Officers patrol by:

• Foot

Field Services is also comprised of a 24-hour communications center and a Special Events and Training Lieutenant.

ISU Police investigates all criminal offenses on campus. Officers have full power to detain, investigate and arrest. Under some circumstances, their authority extends beyond ISU’s physical boundaries by virtue of a mutual aid agreement with the City of Ames.

Officers follow up crime reports through investigative leads and by periodically reviewing reports of old crimes to determine if further action is possible. During investigations, they may issue summons, obtain search warrants or make arrests. Iowa State officers work closely with the Ames Police Department, the Story County Sheriff’s Department, the Story County Attorney’s Office and other community organizations to promote fairness in the criminal justice system. The department has regular contact with the State Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. ISU Police makes approximately 1,000 arrests each year.

The ISU Police threat assessment process is designed to identify individuals of concern, investigate individuals and situations that have come to attention of others, and assess the information gathered.  If necessary, manage individuals and/or the situations to reduce any potential threat that may be posed.

The Process of Threat Management

• Early identification of individuals at risk
• Centralized reporting to ISU Police through Threat Assessment and Management Coordinator
• Initial threat assessment
• Review by Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) if meets severity and/or complexity criteria
• Implement threat management plan
• Monitor and re-evaluate plan to effect safety
• Refer and follow-up as appropriate

Threat Management Process:  Assessment Guidelines

• Consideration of multiple behavior and contextual factors
• Avoid reliance on single factors
• Utilize multiple collateral data sources (first-hand knowledge, credible sources, etc)
• Assess impact of investigative process
• Fact based and specific to the incident
• Focus on behavior over traits
• Focus on understanding of context
• Examine progression of behavior over time
• Focus on prevention and not prediction
